The schools ethos has always been first and foremost about the ‘enjoyment of dance’ and we pride ourselves on teaching the children in a happy, friendly atmosphere. Whilst we do expect students to be disciplined and work hard towards their exams, we do not believe in putting them under un-due pressure as we want them to enjoy their classes. Building up the intensity of  work gradually on each grade enables all children to reach their fullest possible potential in examinations. 

The students also take ‘medal tests’ which are taught alongside the exam work. This gives younger children, who are not yet old enough to take the exams, something to work towards. It also gives them the experience of taking a ‘test’ in front of an external examiner. Medal Tests are invaluable in teaching the children to ‘Perform’, since much of the exam syllabus is ‘exercise’ based.  

Once every 2 years we perform a school show. We include all children, regardless of ability, from Pre-Primary (4 years) upwards. Baby Class is not included as we feel they are too young to participate. We also take part in short ‘displays’  for various organisations, such as nursing homes and fetes.

Mavlow School of Dance opened in West Kirby on 2nd June 1978 by Mrs Mavis Lowe shortly before relocating to the area with her husband and daughters. Previously the school was based in Wigan, Lancashire for 13 years.  Classes were held in rented accomodation at  Westbourne Hall, Westbourne Road before moving into the schools own premises in Banks Road on 2nd November 1978. The school became established there and built up a good reputation over the next 10 years. We then moved to the current premises in January 1989.

 Mrs Lowe’s eldest daughter Paula  began teaching at the school in November 1986 whilst completing her dancing qualifications and in January 1988 became a full teaching partner in the business.
